History
The 1st Marine Division was officially formed in 1941, just before the United States entered World War II. It was the first unit of its kind to be created in the Marines. The division was sent to fight across the Pacific Ocean against Japanese forces.
During the war, the division took part in some of the hardest fighting of the entire conflict. They fought on many small islands, often in thick jungles or on sandy beaches. The Marines were known for their courage and their ability to capture difficult positions despite heavy fire.
After World War II, the division continued to serve its country. It fought in the Korean War, where it was famous for its role in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. Today, the 1st Marine Division is still a very active and respected part of the United States military.
