History
Indonesia entered the submarine age in the late 1950s and early 1960s by acquiring a fleet of twelve Whiskey-class submarines from the Soviet Union. This made Indonesia one of the few nations in Asia to possess a powerful submarine arm.
The submarines conducted secret patrols, intelligence gathering, and deterrence operations throughout the Indonesian archipelago during Cold War conflicts.
Operating complex submarines required extensive training in harsh tropical waters. Although they were retired as they aged, they laid the foundation for modern Indonesian underwater operations.
