History
Before World War II, the islands were controlled by the Netherlands. When Japan invaded during the war, they pushed the Dutch out. Many locals were forced to work for the Japanese military during this time.
After Japan surrendered in 1945, Indonesian leaders declared their independence. The Dutch tried to return and take control of the islands again, leading to a long struggle. This fighting was known as the Indonesian National Revolution.
The conflict lasted for several years. Eventually, the Dutch recognized Indonesia as a new, independent country in 1949. Since then, the nation has worked to build its own government and economy while managing its many islands.
