History

Bintang Kartika Eka Paksi was established in 1968 as the premier merit order of the Indonesian Army. The name comes from the Army's motto, meaning the noble bird with extraordinary ambition to serve the country.

The medal is split into three classes to recognize varying levels of leadership and service. It was widely awarded during the late twentieth century to commanders organizing border defense, training programs, and military operations.

Today, it is awarded regularly to both Indonesian army personnel and visiting military leaders who foster military cooperation with Indonesia's land forces.
