History
The Vickers machine gun was a heavy, water-cooled machine gun used extensively by Indian soldiers across many theaters of war. Mounted on a heavy metal tripod, it required a trained team to carry ammunition, fill the cooling jacket with water, and aim. When firing constantly, the water inside the jacket would boil, creating steam that had to be collected in a tin can.
In World War I, Indian battalions operated Vickers guns on the Western Front, in Gallipoli, and throughout the Middle East to break up enemy cavalry charges and infantry assaults. Its remarkable engineering allowed it to fire thousands of rounds uninterrupted for hours without breaking down.
The weapon saw widespread service again during World War II, defending jungle perimeters in Burma and fortifying hillsides in Italy. It remained in front-line service through the Korean War era and early Cold War mountain skirmishes before being phased out.
