The Ashoka Chakra was established on January 4, 1952, by the President of India as the Ashoka Chakra Class I. It was designed to recognize acts of extraordinary courage occurring away from open declared warfare. In January 1967, the government officially dropped the class numbering and renamed it simply the Ashoka Chakra.
This award fills an important role in recognizing heroes who counter terrorism, rescue citizens during violent crises, or show selflessness in disaster zones. Both military members and ordinary civilians can receive it.
