History
The Samanya Seva Medal 1965 was instituted by the Indian Government on May 8, 1965. It replaced the older General Service Medal 1947, creating a modernized medal for active operations along the nation's borders. The medal was made retroactive to pick up operations that took place after 1965.
Rather than making a new medal for every small crisis, the military attaches different clasps to the ribbon. These metal bars show exactly which campaign or theater the soldier served in, such as Kutch, Nagaland, or the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier.
