History
In the early 1960s, Indonesia became one of the few nations outside the Soviet bloc to fly the Tu-16 jet bomber. These aircraft were capable of flying long distances over open ocean.
Indonesian crews flew them on maritime patrols and armed reconnaissance missions. Some were even outfitted to launch anti-ship missiles, which worried rival navies in the region.
Like many other Soviet-supplied planes in the Indonesian fleet, the bombers became difficult to keep flying as relations with Moscow changed. They were retired from active service in the 1970s.
