History

The T-34/85 was originally built in the Soviet Union during World War II to fight German armor. Decades later, Soviet and Vietnamese partners gave these tanks to the Pathet Lao and Laotian armed forces. The tank was well known for being tough, fairly simple to repair, and effective across difficult terrain.

In Laos, the T-34 helped ground units secure supply routes and defend strongholds during the civil strife tied to the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Its thick armor and powerful gun gave troops a strong advantage in rough areas like the Plain of Jars.

Even after newer tanks were made, Laos kept operating the T-34 for many decades. They became legendary in the country because they remained running long after they were first built.
