History
Instituted in 1950, the Order of the Crown was created as Laos moved toward full independence from France. King Sisavang Vong wanted a major decoration to reward commanders and public servants who helped build the newly sovereign nation. It was organized into four formal classes.
The medal featured symbols of the Lao monarchy and traditional Buddhist regalia. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, it was awarded to senior army generals, staff planners, and foreign military liaisons who strengthened the armed forces.
The award ceased being conferred inside Laos after the 1975 political revolution. However, historians study it today as a key decoration from the formative years of the independent Kingdom of Laos.
