History
Italian designers created the Semovente by placing a heavy field gun directly into the hull of an M13/40 tank. Because it did not have a rotating turret, it sat very low to the ground and was easy to hide in the desert.
It was intended to support infantry, but crews quickly found it was Italy's best weapon against thick Allied tanks. Its special explosive shells could punch through tough armor at good distances.
Allied tank crews respected this vehicle because it was hard to spot until it fired, making it one of the most successful Italian armored designs of the war.
