History

The PT-76 was designed by the Soviet Union to move easily across rivers, marshes, and lakes. When fighting spread through Southeast Asia, Soviet cargo planes and North Vietnamese allies sent these swimming tanks to Laotian forces.

Because Laos has major waterways like the Mekong River and many swampy valleys, normal heavy tanks had trouble getting around. The PT-76 used special water jets to cross rivers without needing bridges, surprising enemy outposts.

It saw combat in several critical battles of the Laotian Civil War during the wider Vietnam War. Its light armor could not stop heavy rockets, but its mobility made it valuable for surprise attacks.
