History
The PKM is a general-purpose machine gun that fires large bullets. It was created in the Soviet Union to provide heavy fire support for infantry soldiers. Because it is simple to operate and very durable, it found its way into almost every corner of Afghanistan starting in the late 1960s. During the Soviet occupation, both Soviet soldiers and the Mujahideen used the PKM in battle. It became one of the most common weapons because it was easy to carry through the mountains and could destroy targets at long distances. Even after the war ended, the PKM remained a standard weapon for Afghan security forces and other groups throughout the conflict that followed.
