History
The Nishan-i-Aftab, or Order of the Sun, was one of the highest decorations of the Kingdom of Afghanistan. It was created around 1920 by King Amanullah Khan, the ruler who had just led Afghanistan to full independence from Britain.
The order was a richly jeweled badge shaped like the rays of the sun. It was awarded for distinguished service to the kingdom, and it had a special class for women, which made it unusual among honors of its time.
As the kingdom changed over the decades, the order faded from use. Today it is a rare and beautiful piece of history, kept in museums and collections around the world.
