History
The Order of the Leader, known in Persian as Nishan-i-Sadari, was one of the great honors of the Kingdom of Afghanistan. It was created in the 1920s during the reforming reign of King Amanullah Khan, when Afghanistan was building its first modern system of national honors.
The Order ranked directly below the Order of the Supreme Sun, the kingdom's highest award. Its top class, the Grand Cordon, was worn as a sash across the shoulder with a shining breast star, in the style of the great royal orders of Europe and Asia.
The Order rewarded distinguished leadership and service to the Afghan state. It was given to senior officials, military leaders, and foreign dignitaries who had helped Afghanistan.
Like the other royal orders, the Order of the Leader stopped being awarded in 1973, when the kingdom fell and Afghanistan became a republic.
