History

The Mi-17 is a famous helicopter designed in the Soviet Union. It became a workhorse for the Afghan military during the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s. Because it is built to be tough, it can fly in high altitudes and hot weather, which is common in Afghanistan. After the Soviet Union left, many of these helicopters remained in the country. During the War in Afghanistan that began in 2001, the United States helped the Afghan Air Force rebuild its fleet by giving them many updated versions of this reliable machine. Pilots liked it because it was easy to fly and fix even when far away from big cities. It was essential for moving soldiers and wounded people across the country's jagged landscape.
