History
The M4 Sherman was the most widely used medium tank among Allied armies, including the British Indian Army. It was powered by a dependable engine, had thick armor, and could be repaired quickly with spare parts. Indian tank regiments received Shermans to counter enemy armor in Asia and the Mediterranean.
In the final phases of World War II, Indian-crewed Shermans crossed wide rivers and rolled across open plains to liberate towns across Burma. The 75mm main gun fired high-explosive rounds that destroyed enemy fortifications and cleared roads for the infantry. Crews enjoyed having a spacious interior and a radio to coordinate with foot soldiers.
India kept a large fleet of Shermans after gaining independence in 1947. During major Cold War border confrontations in 1965, Indian Sherman tanks fought in large armored showdowns, holding defensive lines until newer tanks arrived.
