History
The M3 Stuart was a small, fast-moving American-made tank supplied to British Indian forces during World War II. While it did not possess the thick armor of larger tanks, its speed made it very nimble. Indian armored regiments found it especially helpful on rough terrain where heavier vehicles became stuck.
During the tough Burma Campaign, Indian tank crews drove Stuarts through dense brush and muddy riverbeds to defeat Japanese positions. The tank's 37mm gun was strong enough to knock out enemy bunkers and light armored cars. Its compact design allowed it to travel along narrow mountain trails that enemy commanders believed were impossible for tanks to cross.
Following World War II, Indian units kept using the Stuart in early Cold War mountain operations. Notably, during fighting at Zojila Pass in 1948, Indian forces surprised opponents by driving Stuart tanks at extreme high altitudes in the snow, securing a dramatic victory.
