The M13/40 of Italy

History

Italy built the M13/40 to replace older light tanks that could not fight larger enemy armor. It carried a small turret cannon and twin machine guns in the front of the body.

Most of these tanks fought in the sandy deserts of North Africa. However, the tank used bolted armor plates that could crack when hit, and its engine often struggled in the hot sand and dust.

While it was outmatched by newer Allied tanks like the Sherman, Italian crews fought bravely in them until better vehicles slowly arrived.
