The M101 Howitzer of Laos

History

The M101 howitzer was originally built for the United States military during World War II to deliver heavy explosive shells from long distances. During the Cold War, the U.S. supplied many of these cannons to the Royal Lao Army.

In the mountainous landscape of Laos, artillery was critical for defending isolated military outposts and hilltop landing zones. Crews could tow the howitzer with trucks or lift it into remote camps using transport helicopters.

During the Vietnam War, M101 howitzers were used extensively to break up enemy ground attacks and support allied infantry movements across distant battlefields.
