What were the Littorio-class ships?

The Littorio-class ships were Italy's most advanced battleships, first put into service in 1940. They were built by companies called Ansaldo and CRDA right before World War II began. Their main job was to control the Mediterranean Sea and challenge other large navies.

What kind of weapons did these battleships carry?

These ships carried nine powerful fifteen-inch guns hidden inside three heavy armored turrets. These giant cannons could shoot shells at targets miles away. This massive firepower was designed to destroy enemy ships quickly during a naval battle.

How did these ships go to war?

The ships sailed the Mediterranean Sea to fight against the British Royal Navy. As the war went on, Italy struggled to find enough fuel for its large fleet. Because they used so much oil, the ships were often kept at the docks to save fuel for smaller escort boats.

What made these battleships special?

They had a special underwater defense system built right into the hull. This system acted like a cushion to soak up the energy from an underwater torpedo explosion. It was designed to keep the ship safe and floating if a torpedo hit below the waterline.

What is the history of the Littorio class?

These were the largest and most modern battleships Italy ever made for its navy. They represent Italy's attempt to build a powerful fleet during the Second World War. Even though fuel issues limited their use, they remain famous as symbols of Italian naval engineering.

History

Italy built the Littorio-class ships just before World War II to protect its sea routes and match foreign navies. These battleships were very fast and carried huge fifteen-inch guns inside three large armored turrets.

They had a unique underwater defense system designed to absorb the shock of torpedo explosions. Battleships like the Littorio and the Vittorio Veneto sailed out on missions against the British Royal Navy.

Because Italy suffered from severe fuel shortages during the war, these massive warships often had to remain docked in harbor to save oil for smaller escorts.
