History

During the 1960s, Belgium needed a modern main battle tank to replace aging American tanks like the M47 Patton. In 1968, Belgium chose the West German Leopard 1, becoming the first foreign nation to buy the tank.

The Belgian version was designated the Leopard 1BE. Belgium purchased over three hundred of these tanks between 1968 and 1971. They were placed directly in the Belgian 1st Corps, stationed in West Germany to guard NATO's front line against a potential Soviet invasion.

Belgian engineers upgraded the tanks over time by adding advanced Belgian fire control systems and thermal sights. These tanks served as the armored backbone of Belgium's military defense until the end of the Cold War and beyond.
