History
Belgium is a small nation located between France and Germany. In 1914, Germany asked to move its army through Belgium to attack France. Belgium said no because it wanted to stay neutral, but Germany invaded anyway.
The Belgian army fought hard to protect their homes, even though they were much smaller than the German forces. This delay gave the Allied armies time to prepare their own defenses, which was a very important moment in the early war.
For most of the war, large parts of Belgium were held by German forces. The people of Belgium suffered through hard times, but they stayed strong. Many Belgians helped the Allied cause by giving them secret information about the German army movements.
After the war ended in 1918, Belgium worked to rebuild its cities and towns. The country was recognized for its bravery during the fighting. Today, Belgium remains a key part of Europe and works closely with its neighbors to keep peace in the region.
