Medals & Awards

History
The Order of the Crown was created in 1897 by King Leopold II. It was first meant to honor service in the Congo Free State, but in 1908 it became a full national order of Belgium. It allowed the government to reward commanders and public servants without using only the higher Order of Leopold.
During World War I and World War II, the military division was awarded with crossed swords. Officers received it for leading their troops with distinction against invading forces, while allied leaders received it for their assistance. Small palms could be placed on the ribbon for wartime mentions.
In modern times, it is Belgium's second most important order. It is still awarded today for military leadership, artistic achievements, and public service.
