History
During the early 1960s, Indonesia wanted to build a strong navy to protect its many islands. The Soviet Union sold Indonesia this huge Sverdlov-class light cruiser, which was renamed KRI Irian.
It was one of the biggest and most heavily armed warships in Southeast Asia at the time. Its arrival showed other countries that Indonesia was a serious regional naval power during Cold War standoffs.
However, maintaining such a giant ship proved difficult and expensive. It was retired after several years and eventually scrapped, but it remains a famous part of Indonesian naval history.
