History

In the 1950s, FN designer Ernest Vervier created a brand-new general-purpose machine gun called the Mitrailleuse d'Appui General, or MAG. The weapon combined clever design choices from successful earlier guns to create an exceptionally reliable firearm.

The MAG could be carried by an infantry soldier using a folding bipod, mounted on a heavy tripod for sustained fire, or bolted onto tanks and helicopters. It quickly gained a reputation for working reliably in sand, mud, snow, and extreme heat.

Belgium made the MAG its standard medium machine gun during the Cold War. Dozens of other countries purchased it, including the United States military (as the M240) and Britain (as the GPMG), making it a fixture of battlefields around the globe.
