History
The Flakpanzer Gepard was developed to give West German armored columns mobile protection against low-flying jets and attack helicopters. West German engineers took the sturdy chassis of the Leopard 1 tank and added an advanced armored turret with radar dishes.
The Gepard carried two fast-firing 35-millimeter autocannons mounted on the sides of the turret. Its radar could track attacking planes through bad weather or night darkness and aim the guns automatically. It served faithfully in the Bundeswehr throughout the Cold War and into the twenty-first century.
