History

The F-5 Freedom Fighter entered South Vietnamese Air Force service in 1967. The airplane was designed specifically to give allied nations a modern jet that was affordable and easy to maintain.

South Vietnamese pilots flew the twin-engine jet to strike supply routes along the Ho Chi Minh trail and intercept targets. During the 1972 Easter Offensive, F-5 jets flew dozens of daily bombing sorties to support besieged outposts.

By 1974, South Vietnam operated over one hundred F-5 jets, representing the fastest and most advanced strike platform in their entire military arsenal.
