History
The Navy Gallantry Cross was officially created on August 15, 1964. South Vietnam had a huge network of rivers in the Mekong Delta and thousands of miles of coastline that required constant naval defense.
Sailors and riverboat crews faced intense ambushes from hidden riverbanks. The medal used bronze, silver, or gold anchor devices on its ribbon to mark citations given by different naval commands.
Many sailors who served on Brown Water Navy gunboats, as well as South Vietnamese coastal junk patrols, were awarded this decoration for surviving close-range gun battles.
