Medals & Awards

History
The Gallantry Cross was created in August 1950 to reward military personnel who showed notable bravery in ground, air, or sea battles. It was modelled after the well-known French Croix de Guerre.
The medal used special ribbon attachments to show different ranks of bravery. A bronze palm meant the soldier was cited at the army level, while gold, silver, or bronze stars showed corps, division, or regiment citations.
It was one of the most widely awarded valor medals of the Vietnam War. Entire military units, including hundreds of American, Australian, and South Korean battalions, earned the Gallantry Cross Unit Citation.
