History

The A-1 Skyraider was originally built for the United States Navy at the end of World War II. In the early 1960s, the South Vietnamese Air Force received these tough propeller planes as their main ground-attack weapon.

South Vietnamese pilots appreciated that the Skyraider could fly very slowly near tree level and stay over the battlefield for many hours. This allowed them to strike enemy positions right next to friendly outposts.

Skyraiders carried heavy armor plating that protected pilots from ground fire. They flew ground combat missions until fast jet aircraft took over later in the war.
