B-52 Stratofortress 设计于冷战早期，旨在作为美国终极的空中威慑力量。美国空军需要一架巨大的飞机，可以从北美起飞，飞越大洋，投下核武器，然后安全返回家园。
该飞机于1952年首飞，并于1955年正式投入军事服役。它在巨大的后掠翼下成对安装了八台喷气发动机。机组人员因其巨大的体型而给这台机器起了个绰号叫 BUFF。
在越南战争期间，B-52 执行了数千次地毯式轰炸任务，运载了数吨常规炸药。它能够通过不断升级新的电子设备和导弹，使其在冷战结束及进入二十一世纪后依然保持重要作用。
