Lewis Gun ban đầu được phát triển trong Thế chiến I và vẫn là một loại vũ khí phòng thủ quan trọng trong suốt Thế chiến II. Tại Singapore, các lực lượng tình nguyện địa phương và các tiểu đoàn phòng thủ bờ biển đã sử dụng những khẩu súng máy làm mát bằng không khí này để bảo vệ các bãi biển, đường băng và đường phố trong thành phố.
Khẩu súng có thiết kế đặc trưng với bộ phận làm mát nòng súng và hộp tiếp đạn hình tròn gắn trên đỉnh. Các binh sĩ tình nguyện đã được huấn luyện chuyên sâu về Lewis Gun để chiến đấu chống lại máy bay và quân đổ bộ Nhật Bản trong chiến dịch tháng 2 năm 1942 trước khi pháo đài đảo này thất thủ.
