歴史
1960年代、ベルギーはM47 Pattonのような古いアメリカ製戦車に代わる、近代的な主力戦車を必要としていました。1968年、ベルギーは西ドイツのLeopard 1の採用を決め、この戦車を購入した最初の外国となりました。
ベルギー仕様の車両はLeopard 1BEと名付けられました。ベルギーは1968年から1971年の間に、300両以上のこの戦車を購入しました。それらは西ドイツに駐留するベルギー第1軍団に配備され、ソ連の侵攻に備えてNATOの最前線を守りました。
ベルギーの技術者は、高度な射撃統制システムや熱線映像装置を追加することで、時間をかけて戦車を改良しました。これらの戦車は、冷戦の終結後も長きにわたり、ベルギー軍の防衛における装甲戦力の中心として活躍しました。
