第二次世界大戦中、スペインはドイツのMesserschmitt Bf 109戦闘機を国内でライセンス生産する契約を結びました。しかし、戦争が終わった後、オリジナルのドイツ製エンジンを入手することが不可能になり、スペインの技術者たちは機体の改造を余儀なくされました。スペインの設計者たちは、この機体にイギリスのRolls-Royce Merlinエンジンを組み合わせることに成功し、HA-1112 Buchonが誕生しました。この戦闘機は、1950年代から1960年代の冷戦期にかけて、スペイン空軍で長く活躍しました。その後、多くの機体が航空映画の傑作でドイツ軍機役として使われたことで、世界的な名声を得ました。
