歴史
1950年代、FN社の設計者エルネスト・ヴェルヴィエは、Mitrailleuse d'Appui General（MAG）と呼ばれる全く新しい汎用機関銃を開発しました。この武器は、過去の優れた銃の賢明な設計を組み合わせることで、非常に信頼性の高い銃器となりました。FN MAGは、折りたたみ式の二脚を使って歩兵が持ち運んだり、重い三脚に据え付けて持続射撃を行ったり、戦車やヘリコプターに固定して使用することができました。砂、泥、雪、そして極端な暑さの中でも確実に作動するということで、すぐに評判となりました。ベルギーは冷戦時代、FN MAGを標準的な中機関銃として採用しました。アメリカ軍（M240として）やイギリス軍（GPMGとして）を含む多くの国々がこの銃を購入し、世界中の戦場に欠かせない装備となりました。
