History
The Order of the Republic (Wisam al-Jumhuriya) was created by Prime Minister Abd al-Karim Qasim following the July 14, 1958 revolution. It was founded to mark Iraq's transformation from a monarchy to an independent republic and to celebrate revolutionary heroes.
The award was divided into military and civil divisions. The military grade displayed crossed scimitars and traditional Arab Islamic geometric patterns, symbolizing defense of the new state.
Through various leadership changes in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, the order remained one of Iraq's highest honors. It was awarded sparingly to senior generals, cabinet leaders, and international partners.
