History
In 2003, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) took command of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. This broad 21st-century alliance brought together dozens of Allied and partner countries to rebuild infrastructure and fight extremist insurgents.
The alliance issued the NATO Medal with a bronze 'ISAF' clasp to recognize the contributions of deployed personnel. Thousands of soldiers, sailors, and aviators from Allied countries received this award over more than a decade of joint operational service.
