History
Early in World War II, American bombers faced heavy losses because friendly fighters ran out of fuel before reaching distant targets. The P-51 Mustang solved this critical challenge when engineers combined its sleek aerodynamic body with the powerful British-designed Merlin engine.
Carrying drop-tanks filled with extra gasoline, Mustangs escorted bombers all the way to Berlin and back safely. The aircraft also served as a ground-attack fighter-bomber during the Korean War before jet engines replaced piston aircraft completely during the Cold War.
