Medals & Awards

History
The Distinguished Service Cross was created in 1918 during World War I. It was made to honor Army soldiers who showed great bravery in combat but whose acts did not rise to the level of the Medal of Honor. The medal is a bronze cross with an eagle in the center and a wreath of laurel leaves.
The award is given only to members of the United States Army. The Navy and Marines have their own version called the Navy Cross, and the Air Force has the Air Force Cross. Thousands of soldiers have received the Distinguished Service Cross across World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and later conflicts.
