History
The M1A1 Abrams is the United States Army's main battle tank, an improved version of the M1 Abrams introduced in the 1980s. It has a 120mm smoothbore gun, thick composite armor, and a gas-turbine engine. During the 1991 Gulf War, M1A1 Abrams tanks destroyed large numbers of Iraqi T-72 tanks at battles like 73 Easting while taking very few losses. The Abrams could see and shoot farther and more accurately than Iraqi tanks, proving the value of modern United States armor.
