History
During the height of the Cold War, Norway wanted quiet patrol submarines capable of operating in the intricate channels of its coast. Built in West Germany as a custom version of the Type 207 submarine, fifteen Kobben-class boats joined the Norwegian Navy.
Their small hulls and non-magnetic steel construction made them difficult for sonar and magnetic detectors to spot. Throughout the Cold War, they tracked movements in the Norwegian Sea and guarded strategic water routes until retired and succeeded by modern vessels.
