History

Created alongside the Freedom Cross in May 1945, the King Haakon VII Freedom Medal served as a broader honor for wartime service. It recognized both military and civilian efforts that helped free Norway from Nazi occupation.

Many ordinary citizens who helped the underground resistance, smuggled supplies, or supported the legitimate Norwegian government-in-exile were granted this medal. Like the Freedom Cross, it was a retrospective award for World War II and is no longer issued today.
