History
The Georgios Averof was bought by the Royal Hellenic Navy just before the Balkan Wars and quickly became a national symbol. Its thick steel armor and large cannons helped Greece dominate the Aegean Sea.
During World War I, the ship guarded Allied transport vessels and patrolled sea routes. When Axis armies attacked Greece during World War II, the crew bravely sailed the ship to safety in Egypt to keep fighting.
In the Indian Ocean, the cruiser guarded important Allied supply convoys. Today, this historic ship is preserved as a floating naval museum in Athens, showing children how sailors served their homeland.
