History
The Medal of Military Merit was established in 1916 during World War I by the National Defence government. It was designed to recognize meritorious command, organizational excellence, and dedication to duty by military officers.
Throughout the 20th century, the medal underwent several adjustments in its criteria and design. Originally given for wartime command, it gradually evolved into an award that could also honor superior leadership and career achievement during peacetime.
The award was formally updated in 1974 to align with the constitution of the Hellenic Republic. Today, it is divided into four classes that reflect rank and length of meritorious command.
