History

During the tense early years of the Cold War, jet aviation developed rapidly. Canada licensed the American F-86 Sabre design and built their own upgraded version at the Canadair factory in Montreal, Quebec.

Canadian engineers installed their own powerful Avro Orenda jet engine into later marks of the aircraft. This engine gave the Canadian-built Sabre faster climb rates and superior speed compared to almost any other fighter jet flying in the western world at that time.

Canada sent twelve front-line squadrons of these fighters to bases in France and West Germany to patrol European borders. Canadian pilots flew thousands of Cold War air patrols to deter potential attacks, making the Sabre one of Canada's most celebrated military airplanes.
