北越在北部湾部署了一个小型 P-4 快艇中队以保卫其港口。1964 年 8 月，北越的 P-4 鱼雷快艇在北部湾事件中攻击了一艘美国驱逐舰，这一事件直接导致美国在越南战争中大幅升级了军事行动。
