在1960年代末，西班牙空军需要一种坚固的运输机来取代老旧的二战时期运输机。西班牙航空制造公司CASA设计了一种外形方正、结构坚固的飞机，命名为C-212 Aviocar。C-212 Aviocar在1974年的冷战时期开始服役。它可以运输轻型货物、投放伞兵或撤离受伤士兵。由于配备了大型坚固的起落架，C-212可以轻松在未铺设的泥土空地和碎石跑道上着陆。它成为了西班牙最成功的航空出口产品之一。
