Súng trường M14 được chế tạo tại Hoa Kỳ vào cuối những năm 1950 để thay thế các loại súng trường cũ từ Thế chiến II. Nó bắn loại đạn cỡ lớn có khả năng bắn trúng các mục tiêu ở xa với sức công phá khủng khiếp. Súng có báng gỗ, hộp tiếp đạn hai mươi viên và thước ngắm cơ khí chắc chắn. Ethiopia đã nhận được những lô súng trường M14 lớn từ Hoa Kỳ trong các chương trình viện trợ quân sự thời Chiến tranh Lạnh. Các binh sĩ Ethiopia, bao gồm các đơn vị cận vệ hoàng gia và các tiểu đoàn bộ binh, đã sử dụng loại vũ khí này làm súng trường tiêu chuẩn.
