Trong giai đoạn chiến tranh giằng co của World War I, mỗi người lính đều cần một cách để đào hố trú ẩn nhanh chóng. Áo-Hung và các quân đội châu Âu khác đã cấp phát xẻng đào hào nhỏ gọn làm thiết bị tiêu chuẩn cho tất cả bộ binh.
Công cụ này được đeo vào thắt lưng hoặc ba lô của người lính để luôn trong tầm tay. Họ dùng nó để đào hố cá nhân, thoát nước trong các chiến hào ẩm ướt và thỉnh thoảng dùng như một vũ khí cận chiến tàn bạo.
Những công cụ đào hào bền bỉ này vẫn là trang bị bộ binh tiêu chuẩn trong suốt cả hai cuộc World War. Nhiều chiếc vẫn được lưu kho và sử dụng bởi các đơn vị dự bị cho đến tận thời kỳ Cold War.
